We who engage in nonviolent direct action are not the creators of tension. We merely bring to the surface hidden tension that is already alive

I have consistently preached that nonviolence demands that the means we use must be as pure as the ends we seek.

Lamentably, it is a historical fact that privileged groups seldom give up their privileges voluntarily. Individuals may see the moral light and voluntarily give up their unjust posture; but, as Reinhold Niebuhr has reminded us, groups tend to be more immoral than individuals.

But now I must affirm that it is just as wrong, or perhaps even more so, to use moral means to preserve immoral ends.

This business of burning human beings with napalm, of filling our nation's homes with orphans and widows, of injecting poisonous drugs of hate into the veins of peoples normally humane, of sending men home from dark and bloody battlefields physically handicapped and psychologically deranged, cannot be reconciled with wisdom, justice, and love.

The time is always right, to do what's right.
