When evil men burn and bomb, good men must build and bind.

The book the reader has now before his eyes - from one end to the other, in its whole and in its details, whatever the omissions, the exceptions, or the faults - is the march from evil to good, from injustice to justice, from the false to the true, from night to day, from appetite to conscience, from rottenness to life, from brutality to duty, from Hell to Heaven, from nothingness to God. Starting point: matter; goal: the soul. Hydra at the beginning, angel at the end.

You finally did it! I suppose so. Though I don't really know what 'it' is. It is life, sweetie. Rich, abundant, thrilling life! You've embraced it... What he did to you was evil. But it struck me the other day that if you turn evil around, you're actually left with a pretty clear directive: live. And that's exactly what you're doing. You going to live. Really live.

Our grief is not a cry for war. "That's how New Yorkers feel," the driver said. "They know what bombing looks like, and they know the hell it is. But outside New York, people will feel guilty because they weren't here. They'll be yelling for revenge out of guilt and ignorance. Sure, we all want to catch the criminals, but only people who weren't in New York will want to bomb another country and repeat what happened here.

We must come to see that peace is not merely a distant goal we seek, but it is a means by which we arrive at that goal. We must pursue peaceful ends through peaceful means.

The problem is not merely man against man or nation against nation. It is man against war.

Which not peace for the man who is forced to go to war, for he will find his peace. But wish peace for the man who goes to war willingly, for he will never find his peace.

I too hope in this short reign to be a man of peace.

Wars are, of course, as a rule to be avoided but they are far better than certain kinds of peace.

All men desire peace, but very few desire those things that make for peace.

First keep the peace within yourself, then you can also bring peace to others.
