18th April, 1872.—I pray the good Lord of all to favor me so as to allow me to discover the ancient fountains of Herodotus, and if there is anything in the underground excavations to confirm the precious old documents, the Scriptures of truth, may He permit me to bring it to light, and give me wisdom to make a proper use of it.

To know the will of God, we need an open Bible and an open map.

If you are not guided by God, you will be guided by something or someone else.

When there is a fight between your heart and your head, experience has taught me that the best thing you can do is pick up your Bible and remind yourself of what God says.

Take time to pray and listen to God...say, 'Sir, what should I say at this moment? What should I do? My ears are open and my eyes are open. I'm listening.'

Oh Lord, may I be directed what to do and what to leave undone.

Discernment is God's call to intercession, never to faultfinding.

God may not guide us in an obvious way because he wants us to make decisions based on faith and character.

By the grace of God we will never pluck unripe fruit. We will never press people to decision, because we'll lead them to damnation and not salvation.

We're not like robots. God promises to guide us through the Holy Spirit, but He gives us the freedom to make our own decisions.

When man thinks in self-conscious submission to the voluntary revelation of the self-sufficient God, he has therewith the only possible ground of certainty for his knowledge.

Don't think so much about who is for or against you, rather give all your care, that God be with you in everything you do.
