Don't let religious-sounding reluctance fool you. When you plead "unworthy" and refuse to be served by God, you place your judgment about yourself above God's. You say you would prefer to go it alone, and you imply that your unworthiness goes beyond the scope of God's mercy and grace. You must think that God cleanses you only from ordinary sins, not from the spectacular ones.

The church saves sinners, but science seeks to stop their manufacture.

To confess your sins to God is not to tell God anything God doesn't already know. Until you confess them, however, they are the abyss between you. When you confess them, they become the Golden Gate Bridge.

Know that neither to have the child nor not to have the child is without the possibility of tragic consequences for everybody yet be brave in knowing also that not even that can put us beyond the forgiving love of God.

Truth never appeals to us unless it is personal.

God can do something with those who see what they really are and who know their need of cleansing but can do nothing with the man who feels himself worthy.

One reason for a long life is penance. Time is given us not just to accumulate that which we cannot take with us, but to make reparation for our sins.

The man who says, 'I am so stupid,' instead of 'Lord be merciful to me, I sinner,' is still far from rebirth.

Oh, hour of forgiven sin, moment of perfect pardon, our soul shall never forget you while, within you, life and being find immortality!

But - but the greatest way to witness is by walking that straight and narrow and also realizing that you're going to mess up. That's what grace is for. We're going to fall, but we've got to get back up. And you've got to improve. And that's what I'm all about.
