Being the church that Jesus intended means that we must participate in God's eternal purposes for his world. Renewal means more than reinventing ourselves; it means rediscovering the primal power of the Spirit and the gospel already present in the life of the church—reconnecting with this purpose and recovering the forgotten ways. This purpose and potential have always been there, but individuals and communities have largely lost touch with them.

Strict exercise of self-control is an essential feature of the Christian's life.

The most astonishing observation one makes today is that people surrender everything in the face of nothingness: their own judgment, their humanity, their neighbors. Where this fear is exploited without scruple, there are no limits to what can be achieved.[130]

So look to Christ when you are afraid, think of Christ, keep him before your eyes, call upon Christ and pray to him, believe that he is with you now, helping you... Then fear will grow pale and fade away, and you will be free, through your faith in our strong and living Savior, Jesus Christ.

The Greek word for "spirit" is pneuma. The word can also mean "wind" or "breath." That Greek word is the root for what we call pneumonia. Just as it was necessary to reinflate my lungs to overcome pneumonia, I needed the breath of God to help me overcome the depression of my spirit.

The biggest mistake you can make in your life is to be always afraid of making a mistake.

What paralyzes life is lack of faith and lack of audacity. The difficulty lies not in solving problems but identifying them.
