If a man lies with his father’s wife, he has uncovered his father’s nakedness. Both must surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.

Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor children for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.

but the wicked will be cut off from the land, and the unfaithful will be uprooted.

The righteous man is delivered from trouble; in his place the wicked man goes in.

Instead, each will die for his own iniquity. If anyone eats the sour grapes, his own teeth will be set on edge.

Now suppose that man has a violent son, who sheds blood or does any of these things,

Without God all things go wrong, both in our living and in our thinking. The denial of the existence of God means the elevation of the creature into the place of God.

The righteous man does not need your sympathy, but the unrighteous; he who, by his wrong-doing, is laying up for himself long periods of suffering and woe is in need of it.

Only slowly could these men be guided back to the commonplace truth that no one has the right to do wrong, not even if wrong has been done to them. We had to strive to lead them back to this truth, or the consequences would have been much worse than the loss of a few thousand

We live by the assumption that what's good for us is good for the world. And this is based on the even flimsier assumption that we could know with any certainty what's good for us.

Vengeance comes from the individual and punishment from God.

The soul in the darkness sins, but the real sinner is he who caused the darkness.
