Too many of our fellow Americans have to struggle each day against the obstacles imposed by racism, history and original sin. These obstacles are real, and they affect the way police departments have acted toward Black Americans.

Since politics fundamentally should be a moral enterprise, the church in this sense has something to say about politics.

I'm basically a 'do unto others' type person. I don't have any religious feelings because I'm an atheist, but I live my life like there's a God. And if there was he'd probably love me.

We do not want to have mercy for the things God has under judgment. We do not want to fall in the ditch on the otherside of unsanctified mercy.

Love is more just than justice.

But love must be aggressively translated into simple justice.

Never succumb to the temptation of becoming bitter. As you press for justice, be sure to move with dignity and discipline, using only the instruments of love.

There is a more excellent way, of love and nonviolent protest.

When I am commanded to love, I am commanded to restore community, to resist injustice, and to meet the needs of my brothers.

Art is love creating the new world and justice is love rolling up its sleeves to heal the old one.

Whatever other resources you may have, you can always use your voice and your vote to effect change.

There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs — partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs.
