I'm not saying that you should live your life according to the whims of others. I am simply pointing out that if you are to become a person of influence — if you want people to believe the things you believe or buy what you are selling — then others must at least be comfortable around you. A successful life has a great deal to do with perspective. And another person's perspective about you can sometimes be as important as your perspective is about yourself.

As followers of Jesus, we should be known as people who like people who are nothing like us.

I try to see the good in everybody, and I don't care who people are as long as they're themselves, whatever that is.

I was raised in a family where vulnerability was barely tolerated: no training wheels on our bicycles, no goggles in the pool, just get it done. And so I grew up not only with discomfort about my own vulnerability, I didn't care for it in other people either.

A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges is not Christian. This is not in the Gospel.

If you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you have differences, you can find common ground on a way forward.

That's something that the world needs to learn today: that you can disagree and still be friends.

Through a respectful exchange of ideas and emphasis on shared goals, I am confident we can put many of our disagreements behind us to ensure a better future for all Americans.

Better to be a loving person without knowing how you got there, than an expert no one can stand to be around.

To get others to do what you want them to do, you must see things through their eyes.
