It was relatively easy, we now realize, to categorize countries and nations. You knew who your enemies were and whom you could count on as collaborators and friends. And even more importantly, you had ready-made scapegoats to take the blame when things were going wrong.

Offended people produce much fruit, such as hurt, anger, outrage, jealousy, resentment, strife, bitterness, hatred, and envy. Some of the consequences of picking up an offense are insults, attacks, wounding, division, separation, broken relationships, betrayal, and backsliding.

That scripture did also tear and rend my soul in the midst of these distractions, The wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt.  There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.  Isa. lvii. 20, 21.

An attitude that really works against people is the desire for equality that feeds petty jealousy. For

All envy is proportionate to desire.

And, speaking generally, passion seems not to be amenable to reason, but only to force.

Joy flees from the selfish, it deserts the quarrelsome; it is hidden from the impure.

But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. (James 3:14 — 16)

Envy first brings depression: "My life isn't as good as yours." Then comes offense: "Why should you have what I don't have?" Which degrades into hatred.

Your levellers wish to level down as far as themselves but they cannot bear levelling up to themselves.

Envy, bleating 'I'm as good as you', is the hotbed of Fascism.

Jealous leaders measure their success by the failure of others.
