Your ordinary acts of love and hope point to the extraordinary promise that every human life is of inestimable value.

It is not that God is the spectator and sharer of our present life, howsoever important that is; but rather that we are the reverent listeners and participants in God's action in the sacred story, the history of the Christ on earth.

Life is not a thing, an essence, or a concept, but a person—more specifically, a particular and unique person.

All thinking about human beings without Christ is unfruitful abstraction. The counterimage to the human being taken up into the form of Christ is the human being as self-creator, self-judge, and self-renewer; these people bypass their true humanity and therefore, sooner or later, destroy themselves.

Here we too must act on the stage, for here the spectator is always a person acting in the drama. We cannot remove ourselves from the action.
