It is one thing for a minister to be an advocate and supporter of missions: it is another and very different thing for him to understand that they are the chief end of the Church, and therefore the chief end for which his congregation exists. It is only when this truth masters him in its spiritual power, that he will be able to give the subject of missions its true place in his ministry.

Unfaithful in prayer, weak in the working of the Spirit, its witness to Christ a mere formality, and unfaithful to its worldwide mission—such are the marks of a powerless church.

The fourth truth of the gospel is that Christ's followers are to be His witnesses, ever testifying of His wonderful love, of His power to redeem, of His continual abiding presence, and of His wonderful power to work in us. Every one of us is called to be living proof and witness of what Jesus can do, not only by His words, but also by His life and actions. Christ's followers must tell people and bring them to the throne of grace.

As a child, Andrew Murray's "world" spanned two continents, Africa and Europe; but ultimately his preaching, teaching, and writing fueled spiritual awakening and revival with a worldwide impact. Andrew Murray was born in 1828 in South Africa, into a Dutch Reformed parsonage. At age ten he and a brother sailed to Scotland for schooling and later to Holland for theological studies, before returning ten years later to South Africa for pastoral ministries of their own.

One of the chief causes of the feeble life in the church is the mistaken idea that our happiness is the main object of God's grace. God's objective is far holier and far higher! He has saved us that we in turn might save others. Every believer is ordained to be the means of imparting to others the life he or she has received.

There is need of a great revival of spiritual life, of true fervent devotion to our Lord Jesus, of entire consecration to His service. It is only in a Church in which this spirit of revival has at least begun, that there is any hope of any very radical change in the relation of the majority of our Christian people to mission work.
