Living without expectations is hard but, when you can do it, good. Living without hope is harder, and that is bad. You have got to have hope, and you must'nt shirk it. Love, after all, hopeth all things. But maybe you must learn, and it is hard learning, not to hope out loud, especially for other people. You must not let your hope turn into expectation.

But faith is not necessarily, or not soon, a resting place. Faith puts you out on a wide river in a boat, in the fog, in the dark. Even a man of faith knows that (as Burley Coulter used to say) we've all got to go through enough to kill us.

Sometimes I knew in all my mind and heard why I had done what I had done, and I welcomed the sacrifice. But there were times too when I lived in a desert and felt no joy and saw no hope and could not remember my old feelings. Then I lived by faith alone, faith without hope. What good did I get from it? I got to have love in my heart.

The modern mind longs for the future as the medieval mind longed for Heaven. The great aim of modern life has been to improve the future—or even just to reach the future, assuming that the future will inevitably be "better.

The ultimate ground of faith and knowledge is confidence in God.

Faith in the widest sense of the word, is assent to the truth, or the persuasion of the mind that a thing is true.

Don't let the fear of what might be rob you of the promise of what can.

You believe in things you cannot see and speak a language that only hearts know.

I know I'm not alone and I don't walk alone. That I won't. When the thin whisper of a veil between what I can't see and what I can is pulled back and for one brief second I get a glimpse of what will be. Where the words 'might' and 'hope' intersect.

Basically, there are two paths you can walk: faith or fear. It's impossible to simultaneously trust God and not trust God.

Really is—in all His power, majesty, wisdom, glory, and honor. He is the King of kings. If He commands it, so shall it be! The more you realize this, the more you'll have faith like the centurion's—trust that honors God and brings Him joy. Jesus, I trust what You say! You are worthy of all my love, devotion, and respect. Amen! My hope is in Jesus because He is worthy of my trust.
