In the end, a life of prayer is a life with open hands—a life where we need not be ashamed of our weaknesses but realize that it is more perfect for us to be led by the Other than to try to hold everything in our own hands.

Many mature, successful men in this life often might still treat God as part of themselves. God is the factotum which comes in handy in times of illness, shock, final exams, in every situation in which we feel insecure. And if it does not work, the only reaction may be to cry louder. Far from becoming the Other, whose existence does not depend on mine, he might remain the easy frame which fits best around the edges of my security.

As I reflect on this reality, it is clear that God is present in the events of my life, yet I act and speak as if I am in control.

Relate to people as a conqueror and they will hide their real nature from you. Violence is the brother and distrust the sister of this way of life.

Faith asks us to jump, to surrender and believe that somewhere, somehow, Someone will catch us and bring us home.

Divine guidance can be found in the books we read, the nature we enjoy, the people we meet, and the events we experience.

Dear Lord, Be with me today. Listen to my confusion and help me know how to live it. I don't know the words. I don't know the way. Show me the way. You are a quiet God. Help me to listen to your voice in a noisy world. I want to be with you. I know you are peace. I know you are joy. Help me to be a peaceful and joyful person. These are the fruits of living close to you. Bring me close to you, dear Lord. AMEN.

That requires the death of what has become so precious to you: influence, success, yes, even affection and praise.

God not only loves the obedient - He enlightens them.

You need never be discouraged or afraid. The way through difficulties has always been prepared for you, and you will find it if you exercise faith.
