Let us never be afraid to be still before God; we shall then carry that stillness into our work; and when we go to church on Sunday, or to the prayer-meeting on week-days, it will be with the one desire that nothing may stand betwixt us and God, and that we may never be so occupied with hearing and listening as to forget the presence of God.

What deadens us most to God's presence within us, I think, is the inner dialogue that we are continuously engaged in with ourselves, the endless chatter of human thought. I suspect that there is nothing more crucial to true spiritual comfort . . . than being able from time to time to stop that chatter including the chatter of spoken prayer.

The celibate is bound to feel lonely in that atmosphere, but it is a different kind of loneliness that plagues the erotic. The former is tempted because, in the natural order, he is without a partner; the other is lonely even when he has his partner, for as St. Augustine reflected: "Our hearts were made for Thee, O Lord, and they cannot rest until they rest in Thee.

Without silence, we will not get any closer to knowing who we are before God.

Just because there's a silence doesn't mean that nothing is going on.

Give yourself time just to be with yourself.

My soul often mourned of more time and opportunity to be alone with God.

Prayer means that, in some unique way, we believe we're invited into a relationship with someone who hears us when we speak in silence.

The instructor is always silent when the test is given... ...When God is silent in your life... You are being tested.
