I am afraid the church is trying to speak out on too many issues that really do not concern the church. There are certain issues we know to be wrong—racial injustice, crime, gambling, dishonesty, pornography. On these matters we must thunder forth as the prophets of God.

I distrust the rash optimism in this country that cries, "Hurrah, we're all right! This is the greatest nation on earth," when there are grievances that call loudly for redress.

When you are right you cannot be too radical; when you are wrong, you cannot be too conservative.

Charity is no substitute for justice withheld.

Justice is the handmaiden of truth, and when truth dies, justice is buried with it.

But love must be aggressively translated into simple justice.

The true conservative is the man who has a real concern for injustices and takes thought against the day of reckoning.

I venture the challenging statement that if American democracy ceases to move forward as a living force, seeking day and night by peaceful means to better the lot of our citizens, fascism will grow in strength in our land.
